Your Depression is Not Caused by a Chemical Imbalance! It is an Allergic Reaction to Inflammation

Statistics show that antidepressant drugs constitute a $10 billion market in the U.S, which is a huge number! These drugs rest on the chemical imbalance theory suggesting that low serotonin levels lead to depressive and anxiety disorders.  However, it turns out that that chemical imbalance theory is hypothetical, as no single experiment has ever proven that a person has an imbalance due to any neurotransmitter or another brain chemical.

This is the reason why many experts overthrew this theory, including David D. Burns. As he notes, “This theory is fueled more by drug company marketing than by solid scientific proof. Billions of dollars of annual profits from the sale of antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications are at stake, so drug companies spend vast amounts of money promoting the chemical imbalance theory. They also subsidize a large portion of the budget of the American Psychiatric Association and underwrite an enormous amount of research and education at medical schools.”

“Academic research should be all about getting to the truth. Drug company research is all about selling new products.”
“But if I tell you that your depression or panic attacks result from a chemical imbalance in your brain, then I’m telling you something that can’t be proven because there is no test for a chemical imbalance in the human brain, ” he adds.

A recent research has shown that depression is actually an allergic reaction to inflammation.  Read on for more in-depth information!

As we all know, inflammation is body`s natural response to any form of foreign invasions, such as an injury or an infection.  When inflammation increases, the body releases various chemicals, such as cytokines.  According to Tim de Chant of NOVA, “Inflammation is our immune system’s natural response to injuries, infections, or foreign compounds. When triggered, the body pumps various cells and proteins to the site through the bloodstream, including cytokines, a class of proteins that facilitate intercellular communication. It also happens that people suffering from depression are loaded with cytokines.”

Chronic inflammation occurs when the omega-6 fats intake is higher than the omega-3 fats intake.  The first type of fatty acids is the building blocks of pro-inflammatory foods, which is the reason why no more than 2% your total daily kcal should come from omega-6 fatty acids.

These days, the average American consumes more than 8% of their calories from omega-6 fats, mostly due to the increased consumption of processed foods.  On the other hand, people rarely eat foods like mackerel, sardines, salmon, and tuna, which means that the consumption of anti-inflammatory foods has dropped significantly.

To sum up, chronic inflammation is caused by high sugar diets, high intake of trans fats, and following an unhealthy diet in general.

Inflammation and Gluten
Gluten is considered as the major culprit for inflammation.  Once it enters the intestinal lining, it makes its way to the bloodstream, and ultimately reaches the brain, where it triggers inflammation.  As a result, the inflammation may grow into neurological disorders like seizures, schizophrenia, Alzheimer`s, and Parkinson`s.
